How to track traffic from ChatGPT and other AI assistants
Updated
Short answer
When someone clicks a link inside an AI answer, the visit usually arrives with the assistant as its referrer, such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai, and ChatGPT often adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the link. Group those sources together to see AI referrals, then connect them to signups and revenue to learn whether they convert. Treat the number as a minimum: some apps send no referrer, so part of AI traffic shows up as Direct.
Two kinds of AI traffic
AI traffic means two different things. AI referrals are people: someone asks an assistant a question, sees your page cited, and clicks through. AI crawlers are software: an assistant’s systems fetching your pages to train models, build a search index, or answer a question in real time.
Referrals appear in normal browser analytics because a person loads your page and runs your tracking script. Crawlers usually never run JavaScript, so they need server-side tracking. This guide covers referrals; the AI crawler guide covers the other half.
How AI referrals show up in analytics
Analytics tools identify where a visit came from using two signals: the referrer the browser sends, and UTM parameters in the landing URL. AI assistants show up through both.
- Referrer: a click on the ChatGPT website usually carries chatgpt.com as the referrer. Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Copilot work the same way on the web.
- UTM tag: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it cites, so the source survives even when the referrer is missing.
- Search engines are different: clicks from AI features inside a search engine, such as Google’s AI Overviews, arrive as ordinary search traffic and cannot be separated from regular results.
Why some AI visits look like Direct
Not every AI click identifies itself. Desktop and mobile apps may open links without sending a referrer, and people often copy a URL from an answer into a new tab. Those visits land in Direct with no source.
That makes measured AI referrals a minimum, not the full total. Watch the trend over weeks rather than single days, and look for rising Direct visits to the pages assistants tend to cite, such as comparisons and how-to guides.
Track AI referrals in Tracwell
- Install the Tracwell script on your site. AI referrals need no extra setup.
- Open Overview to see AI referrals as their own group, then Acquisition to see which assistant sent each visit and the page it landed on.
- Tracwell recognises ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, You.com, Poe and Meta AI by exact source, so generic search traffic is never counted as AI.
- Add a signup goal and, in Product mode, send verified revenue from your server to see whether AI visitors convert, not just arrive.
Track AI referrals in Google Analytics 4
In GA4, create a custom channel group under Admin → Data display → Channel groups. Add a channel named AI assistants whose Source matches a regular expression such as chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini|copilot, and place it above Referral so those visits are not grouped as ordinary referrals.
Make your pages easier for assistants to cite
Assistants cite pages that answer a question directly. Put a short, quotable answer at the top of the page, keep facts like prices and limits in plain text, and use FAQ sections for follow-up questions.
Check robots.txt as well. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity use separate crawlers for training, search and user-requested fetches, so you can block training while still allowing the crawlers that let assistants find and cite your pages.
